2012

November 29-30, 2012: St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador The Hon. Susan Sullivan, the Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors, and Francophone Affairs for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador spoke about programs recently implemented by her government. Ex-officio Councillor Bruce Cooper, Deputy Minister of Health and Community Services, presented on the development Newfoundland and Labrador’s long-term care community support strategies. We co-hosted a Town Hall with the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Boards Association to discuss how health research and evidence could be better used to inform system level decision-making in Newfoundland and Labrador. September 24-25, 2012: Quebec City, Quebec The first-ever joint meeting between the Health Council of Canada and the Commissaire à la santé et au bien-être du Québec. Both expressed an interest in learning from each other’s experience and approach to public reporting on health care performance. Summary.

June 4-5, 2012: Toronto, Ontario Dr. Jack Kitts, spoke at a luncheon hosted by the Council in support of the launch of Progress Report 2012. Councillors and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the 2011-12 Health Innovation Challenge winners. Councillors heard from guest speakers Dr. Graham Sher, CEO of Canadian Blood Services, and Ms. Kira Leeb, Director of Health System Performance, and John Wright, CEO of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). February 23-24, 2012: Vancouver, British Columbia The Council heard from key stakeholders on the British Columbia Tripartite Framework Agreement on First Nation Health Governance. In support of the launch of the Council’s latest report, we held a Town Hall while in Vancouver. Over 50 participants attended, and shared their views on challenges encountered and inroads made toward advancing patient engagement. Summary.

November 21-22, 2011: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Kevin McNamara, Deputy Minister of Health and Wellness in Nova Scotia described early results from a plan by Nova Scotia Health and Wellness for improving emergency care. Senator Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology reflected on progress in implementing the 2004 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care and Christine Power, President and CEO, Capital District Health Authority spoke about Capital Health’s vision “to be a world-leading haven for people-centred health, healing and learning. September 19-20, 2011: Churchill, Manitoba
Mayor Michael Spence described the Sustainable Development Plan for Churchill. Keynote speaker and CEO of the Churchill Regional Health Authority, Derry Martens, described a model of care and community support for Churchill residents. Summary.

May 30-31: Ottawa, Ontario
Maureen O'Neil, President of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation, shared her organization's view on emerging health care policy and health service delivery in Canada. The Council presented its second annual Health Innovation Award to university student winners. Council released Progress Report 2011. Summary.

January 26-27: Toronto, Ontario
The Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for Ontario, spoke about sustaining health care in Ontario, and gave the Health Council a vote of confidence. Derek Burleton, Vice-President and Deputy Chief Economist at TD Canada Trust, spoke about suggested health reforms in Ontario based on a recent public report issued by TD. Summary.
